Sparkling water replaced champagne today as a local company celebrated achieving a major listing with Tesco and is forecast to supply more than 1million bottles of spring water every year to its stores across the Midlands serviced from the retailer’s Lichfield distribution centre.

Chase Spring Water, produced by Aqua Direct from Elmhurst mineral spring near Lichfield, is one of the first brands from Midlands companies to benefit from Tesco’s recently introduced local sourcing initiative which aims to support local suppliers and growers, increase customer choice and reduce 'food-miles' - the carbon footprint associated with food transportation.

More than 7 million litres of water can be produced every day from the bore holes sunk more than 250 metres deep at two separate sites in Staffordshire which supplies both the Chase Spring Water brand and the Elmhurst Spring natural mineral water.

Chase Spring Water’s Director, Helene James, explained: “Since we set up the bottling plant, just four years ago, the demand has been excellent. However, these new listings are fantastic boost as they not only help us develop the business further with the UK’s largest grocery retailer, but also puts our Chase Spring Water brand in front of more than 3 million Tesco customers.”

Tesco’s local sourcing initiative is a nationwide programme and this year around £400m of local products will be sold through its stores across the UK - from potatoes and pork to beer and biscuits - and plans to sell £1 billion by 2011.
